While the older immigrants stayed in Philadelphia, Peter Jr joined those who went to Catawba County, North Carolina to obtain land. He remained there until his death. A story told is that Peter Sr and Christian were serfs in feudal Germany to a Baron who wanted one of his serf's wives as his own. This man poisoned the Baron and fled to America. During the War Between the States he was in the 16th Missouri Cavalry as a private. Enlisted on 3 Aug 1864, age 26, at Marshfield, MO and mustered in 7 Aug 1864 Springfield, Missouri, mustered out 1 Jul 1865, Springfield, MO. In the Webster Co. MO Courthouse at Marshfield, there are several estate papers on George and Nancy Ikerd, that show Alfred's names listed at W. A., W. Alfred and Wm. A. Most of the papers are vouchers and records of how the estate money was spent.
Alfred was sent to the Missouri State Penitentiary for stealing a horse. The theft took place on or about 1 Nov. 1861 in Webster Co., MO. and the action filed on 16 Oct 1862, and didn't go to the jury until Sept 1864, probably sentenced sometime about 1867.
Alfred died 1897 and is buried in the Eureka Cemetery with no marker. Cemetery book shows place of burial.
The birth of William Dewitt is confusing as it is before any of his marriages. William Dewitt just may have been born far before hios parents married. William Alfred was known to 'like the ladies'.
