Charles Lewis Percival’s Exercise Book
Diary from 1820 to 1907
I am currently attempting to find the resting places of all persons mentioned in his diary.
This action allows for accuracy in the names and dates as the handwriting can oft times be very hard to decipher.
When this note is gone, I will have comsidered my work finished. The transcription started about 2005.
A dark blue, soft cover, bound book, seven inches wide, nine inches tall and approximately 3/8” thick.
The writing is in black ink from a fountain pen of some sort in a very old style, and is now very faded.
The writing is very delicate and spidery, extremely small in some cases, until 1895 when it becomes larger.
I have duplicated to the best of my ability each line, each entry, each letter as it appears.
Symbols I have used:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ denotes the end of a page.
@ denotes a common swirl used, a circle with the south western quadrant missing, used in place of ‘ed’ or ‘nd’
What appears to be a joined “l” and “p” is actually be a double “s”. see Oct 15, 1873
Numbers on the right margins are deaths as CLP wrote them, one accounting for all deaths and another for deaths outside his neighborhood.
An “X” at the beginning of an entry denotes the laying on of hands (or miracles brought by prayer)
All the deaths are underlined, which I have omitted to make reading less difficult.
Anything added to the diary, my comments or notations are in pink from here on
I believe he wrote the diary from memory or notes starting in 1898, there are quite a few errors.
Some errors span 20 years. i.e. Mrs Elliott died Aug 21 1876, he notes the death as Aug 21 1896.
When viewed properly from the front, it contains sermons and thoughts and news articles.
When the book is reversed, turned over and opened, CLP wrote his chronological diary as follows:
Carrie has told us of hearing some uncommonly good preaching at the
church lately, & last Sunday I went in, once more, to see for myself,
if there is any good in this long continued effort of the Pres. church.
The boy gave a tolerably good discourse on the new birth, but so dull,
so lifeless, so heartless; with no sign or sound as if any body
knew, or cared a pin about it; that I came home feeling more
than ever, that this whole effect, now continued for twenty-
seven years; is all of man, & totally worthless, & that I did
right, ten years ago, in "turning away from them!"
I don't think I shall ever go near them again!
Feb 3 | Had to shut the door to my well. Hardly any water there. Have to water my
one rembers of! Have to melt snow for the house, & today, for one cow!
Help Lord! |
About this time, I sold my south field; 11 acres; to Aleck
Kezar, for 700 dollars. Then; - in view of my age & in-
creasing feebleness, & the probability of speedy disso-
lution, I thought I had better sell all, & turn it into cash,
which, at my death, would be much easier to settle, than
otherwise. So, as Flora Hussey was anxious to have this place
for hers when I was done with it; - I sold it & deeded it to her for
650 dollars; with the arrangement that I & Wife should live
stay crossed out and replaced with live right along here just tthe same as now, as long as we live. So now, I
am simply a tenant for life. Shall do what I can & take just as
good care of everything as if it were still mine.
